Apple Pie
Filmed on Super 16mm film in Aotearoa/New Zealand, Western Samoa, and a remote mountaintop astro-physics observatory in eastern Oregon high plain desert, Apple Pie uses our solar system as a template for speculatively exploring various ways in which astronomical observation has shaped human evolution, culture, and agency.
The work is structured into ten parts that are named after and take their respective conceptual cues from one of the ten most notable celestial bodies of our solar system. Each part is designed to function autonomously as a standalone conceptual and aesthetic proposition.
But when combined, these ten parts take on a much more complex and generative nature. By smashing physics into poetics and culture into politics, the film becomes a dynamic playground for fertile introspection and relational divination. An instrument of meaning-making as unapologetically messy and verdant as life itself.
